Mobile app
« on: January 03, 2010, 05:20:18 PM »

Hi,

Firstly i should say that OA is awesome so thanks for putting so much effort into developing it! I've been using it for a couple of years now and it allows me to play without having to sacrifice too much of my free time :D

I have recently got a blackberry, and i was wondering if it would be possible to adapt OA to run as a mobile app? I realise it would have to be cut down somewhat, but an app which could have a building queue and which could email if an attack was launched would be so useful!

Is this even possible? I'm sorry, i have never really programmed in java and so i don't know much about how java apps work!

Don't know when, more likely OA will be ported on Android platform, but I don't thing OA may be ported on iPhone or Blackberry platforms.

- iPhone do not support Java language, and I don't like Apple's philosophy/business model
- Blackberry supports Java ME, but it's too limited.

Android would be great. Then I could monitor it from everywhere with my Droid.

If you start to develope anything for Android, let me know. I'll help test it :)

edit: after thinking about this. If OA were ported to android, it would kill your battery in like 5 minutes probably lol. What we really need more is a web GUI built into OA, so we can access it from any browser ;)

Now I'm using VNC on iPhone to connect my Mac @ home from time to time, to make sure everything is working just fine. The advantage of VNC is that even OA crashed I can restart it, disadvantage is I'll need very good 3G signal and the speed is not always tolerable.

Web GUI sounds a better idea.

However, make OA run on telephone will surely impact battery life, personally I think it's not that practical.

what about email data scraping?

What if you could email OA with a build que, and it could email back information such as current resources/fleet/defences/ etc etc.

It might need a lot of parsing and data handling, i'm not sure if Java can support raw emailing, it could go through a web server though to login into an account such as gmail and send information. I mean you setup an email account, for your own OA. you email that, to update it, then OA can use that email to reply back at you.

nearly all mobile phones support email now.
